EADCO GmbH (Germany)

The institution

EADCO (European Aerospace Design Consultants) was formed in Munich in 2006 by a group of aerospace professionals whose comprehensive, specialized competences have been derived from their experience in international aircraft development.

The business activities of EADCO stand on two strong pillars:

On one hand, the development of aircraft components with high expertise in the use of composite materials, as well as in the conception of conventional metallic structures. And, on the other hand the leasing of technical labor, who comply with the highest requirements to the most modern engineering solutions. Both core competences have been successfully used for years by leading European aircraft manufacturers.

EADCO’s workforce consists of qualified and international engineers. Most of them have over 10 years’ experience with aircraft produced worldwide and hold at least one university degree from reputable educational establishments. All EADCO’s engineers are invariably computer literate with their specific CAD/CAM/CAE tools performing analysis and development of complex structures and systems – from the initial concept to product realization.

This includes the following activities:

  • Feasibility studies and conception
  • Pre-development and static layout
  • Detailed construction and production drawings
  • Analysis of the static and dynamic fatigue and damage tolerance
  • Development of Composite components in aerospace and other industries
  • Weight engineering
  • Manufacturing support as required
  • Management: planning & schedule, project execution, project controlling, contract management
  • R&D: research, concept, technology and new products development. Structural and system design.

Additionally, EADCO is shareholder of Elektro Sky GmbH, (later on will be renamed “Scylax” which develops innovative sustainable technologies for the commercial electric aircraft markets. They focus on the research, development and commercialization of advanced technologies for electric aircrafts: “green energy - electric propulsion”.

SCYLAX is developing the green aircraft model named E6, a six-seater. SCYLAX E6 aim to be the first electric aircraft to enter the commercial aviation sector and will be a challenger for the medium to high-end General Aviation market, as the General Aviation market today is concerned about CO2 emissions, noise reduction and future fuel price fluctuations and seeking alternative engine/transportation concepts and solutions.

There are multiple advantages vs. traditional propulsion aircrafts like for example: Low emission level for CO2 and low noise and vibration; Very low operational costs; Easy maintenance.

Additionally, the Aircraft battery can be recharged in an appropriate Hangar with solar panels on the roof. That would mean 100% clean energy and no emission.

Main tasks in SSUCHY

EADCO supports the SSUCHY project as follows:

Defining area of use for possible applications of environmentally friendly aircraft interiors (mostly sandwich panel structure) based on natural fibres and alternative matrices. The strict requirements, mainly related to fire performance, weight, and mechanical properties are the challenge of this project.

The possible applications of the BIO natural fibers materials can be investigated for the following green aircraft interiors:

  • Sidewalls
  • Ceilings
  • Floors
  • Instrumental Panel

The Partners together with EADCO should define the design parameters of the above-mentioned parts fulfilling the aircraft specifications and certification rules. Mechanical properties (skin-core adhesion, flexural strength, and impact resistance), Acoustical properties (transmission loss), Resistance to cabin environment (vibration, humidity, fluid susceptibility, etc.), Weight and the fire performance evaluated and validated through four tests according to the EASA regulations.

The CS-23 certification is for the above mentioned electric aircraft: Propeller driven twin-engine airplanes in the commuter category that have a seating configuration, excluding the pilot seat(s), of nineteen or fewer and a maximum certificated takeoff weight of 8618 kg (19 000 lb) or less.

The CS-25 certification is for turbine powered Large Airplanes.

The Test procedures for Self-Extinguishing Materials must be in accordance with the rules stated in the Section 25.853 Appendix F:

  • Flammability
  • Heat release rate test
  • Smoke density
  • Smoke toxicity

The advantage of possible use of “green material” in a “green aircraft” can represent a worldwide milestone:

  • Further CO2 savings could be achieved at end of the service life due to easier recycling and disposal of the sandwich panels
  • Due to the lower environmental impact during the production of natural fibers and thermoplastic matrices, additional environmental benefits, with reduced particle and gas emissions, can be achieved
  • Green aircraft interior panels are generally much lighter than conventional panels
